Qualifications

In accordance with General Statute 20-88.1 Driver Education is to be offered at the public high schools of this state for all physically and mentally qualified persons who:

  1. Are older than 14 years and six months, with date of birth on or before December 31, 2002
  2. Are approved by the principal of the school
  3. Are enrolled in a public school, private school or home school within the county
  4. Have not previously enrolled in the program

The Cumberland County Schools will no longer allow a student to enroll in a Driver Education Course if that student has previously attended more than 2 hours of the classroom phase and dropped out or failed the course.

North Carolina Law states that students who are 18 years old or older are not required to take Driver Education.  They can go to DMV and apply for a learner’s permit or license.   However, they can register for the 30 hours classroom phase but will need to secure a Learner’s Permit before they can complete the 6 hours behind-the wheel phase.
