Driver Education

Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Instruction

House Bill 158 (Session Law 2020-30) states that public schools are authorized to resume driver education programs in accordance with guidance issued by the  NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

  • Cumberland County Schools resumed behind-the-wheel (BTW) sessions with students on Monday, July 20, 2020.
  • Students who were being driven or who were scheduled to begin behind-the-wheel sessions when school was closed in March will be driven first.
  • When students are assigned, a behind-the-wheel instructor will contact parents of students by phone to schedule BTW sessions.
  • Students are scheduled for BTW sessions based upon (1) when they completed the classroom phase of instruction AND (2) their age (older students have first priority).
  • There is a backlog of students who completed the classroom phase of instruction in Fall 2019 who will be driven before students who completed the classroom phase of instruction in Spring Session 1 2020.
